Student Life Meets Social Media

Ok, ok… I have a confession to make. I’m a bit of a social media addict.

However, being a social media maniac on a college campus doesn’t necessarily mean you have regular episodes of, “oops, where did the last two hours go?” sitting in front of Facebook. Duke is great about staying on top of the latest social media trends and keeping things accessible. The social media tools connected to Duke’s campus can help keep you involved, active, and informed about the people and places around you!

I for one am a big fan of Foursquare, the mobile application that lets you “check in” to locations. Users can leave tips, menu suggestions, photos, and other information about the venues, giving you instant insider advice everywhere you go. At Duke, I’ve found it to be a great resource. When I arrive at the library late at night, preparing for a long evening of homework, I can check in to The Link and voila! Foursquare will tell me which of my friends are also hitting the books in the same place — instant study-buddy locator!

Even better, Duke University has its own Foursquare account. They provide lots of tips and recommendations for great venues nearby to check out. It can be really helpful to know which campus eatery is closest to you (and what the best thing on the menu is!) when you need to make a quick get-away from Kville at dinnertime.

In many of the locations, Duke has provided photos of what that particular campus spot looked like back in the day. As a dancer, naturally one of my favorites is their photo of the Ark, which is now the main studio for the Duke Dance Program! I think that utilizing technology like this to learn tidbits of our campus history is fascinating. It really gives you a perspective of how much some things have changed while others have stayed just the same.

Foursquare is also a great tool to use to discover countless hidden gems of the Durham community. You can “explore” on Foursquare by searching keywords: sushi, espresso, nightlife, shopping, movies…you name it! The more you use the application, the better it becomes at making recommendations to suit your tastes. You can also take advantage of some great discounts and specials when you check in! Believe me, you will really be the favorite at the dinner table when your check in at Tyler’s scores the group a free basket of garlic fries.

Craving more of Duke social media?

We are also on Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, YouTube, Pinterest, and iTunes U!
