Hi! My name is Sarah Haas and I am a freshman currently trying to figure out all things Duke, and I’m loving every second of it! I’m from a small-town called Granite Falls. It is located in Western North Carolina right in the heart of the piedmont of the Appalachian Mountains- a little over two hours from Duke. I’ve lived there all my life, and I can’t imagine growing up anywhere else. I graduated from South Caldwell High School and I went to school with most of my peers K-12, so it’s both strange and exciting starting a brand new life at Duke.
My interests are wide and varied. I’m a passionate coffee fiend, earring admirer, sports enthusiast, cat lover, and reading addict. I absolutely love to read and write and I’m especially interested in poetry. You’ll rarely find me without a book in hand and I’m always perusing Barnes & Noble’s poetry section for more collections. Where do my interests correspond to a possible major? Your guess is about as good as mine! I’m a people person and I love studying cultures, so I’m definitely focusing on humanities. Probable majors I’m considering are Cultural Anthropology, ICS, or Arabic. However, I’m extremely indecisive, so that will probably (definitely) change by tomorrow! But, that’s okay, because I want my time here at Duke to help shape my interests.
As for my involvement in Duke’s social life, I’m still working out where I want to focus my passions- there are so many amazing organizations and clubs offered here! So far, I’m involved in the Catholic Center, will be working for Duke’s Model United Nations high school conference, and I’m hoping to do some volunteer work in the Durham community. I’m planning on adding to this list very soon!
